The New York Times Mini crossword can be a quick solve thanks to its size, but today’s contains a few potential ways to trip up solvers. From a reference to a specific actor to sports trivia, good vocabulary alone may not get you to the finish line. All the same, a little thought and strategy — along with maybe a hint or two — might just be enough.
Unlike Wordle or Connections, there’s no specific way to “lose” the Mini beyond failing to complete it, so there’s no shame in taking your time if you need it. Speaking from experience, though, the more NYT Minis you do, the more the race for a quick finish starts to take over. If one fill is stumping you, switching direction to see if you can get any letters through crossings is usually the best move.

Today’s NYT Mini Crossword Hints
July 10, 2025

Today’s NYT Mini features more proper nouns in the Down fills, so you may want to focus your NYT Mini strategy on the Acrosses if anything is stumping you. I bounced between both for a reasonably efficient fill, but if any are still causing problems, hints for each answer can be a big help.
Across Clues
- 1 Across – This one is self-referential
- 5 Across – A friend to egg and cheese, in this context
- 6 Across – Two words, not one
- 7 Across – An invigorating flavor for many
- 8 Across – Think about this in the context of sports or love
Down Clues
- 1 Down – Also a major player in organized crime
- 2 Down – Apps and some churches have these as well
- 3 Down – An alliterative last name for a Hollywood leading man
- 4 Down – Short for an American city or an intrepid archaeologist
- 5 Down – Explosive slang for when a joke doesn’t land
This puzzle in particular is likely to be easier if you’re American, with several cultural references that are most relevant to the United States. If you’re still stuck after the above clues or just want to get a specific answer as quickly as possible, you might want to go ahead and move on to the solutions.

Spoilers for the NYT Mini crossword are ahead, so turn back if you still want to solve every step of the puzzle. Otherwise, these answers and explanations can help make sense of anything that’s giving you pause.
Across Clues
- 1 Across – MINI. The 5×5 crossword in question is the NYT mini, which sticks to the same grid size on all days except Saturday.
- 2 Across – BACON. Known for its appearance in a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, along with several other breakfast offerings.
- 3 Across – OFOLD. While it can be tempting to try a single word here — “afore,” for instance, it’s “of old” crammed into one fill.
- 4 Across – MINTY. Alternatives exist, but mint is the most standardized toothpaste flavor.
- 8 Across – BASE. Baseball features first, second, and third base, while the fourth (or zeroth) is referred to as home.
Down Clues
- 1 Down – MAFIA. Mafia, or Werewolf, is a social deduction party game.
- 2 Down – ICONS. Icon is used somewhat slangily to describe someone who’s made a mark.
- 3 Down – NOLTE. Nick Nolte is an American actor who’s appeared in films like Cape Fear and a number of television shows.
- 4 Down – INDY. The Pacers are a basketball team from Indiana, which is commonly shortened to Indy.
- 5 Down – BOMB. Failing to get laughs from an audience is often referred to as bombing.
While this wasn’t the hardest that the New York Times has ever put forward, it did take me a bit longer than average, mostly due to figuring out the answer for 6 across. If this NYT Mini crossword stumped you, there’s always tomorrow, and you might not need to know Nick Nolte to do better on it.
