As the release of Hollow Knight: Silksong approaches sometime in 2025, fans are becoming increasingly eager for any news about their beloved upcoming game. Silksong is the long-awaited sequel to award-winning Metroidvania, Hollow Knight, and the community has been waiting for the game for over six years with very little news from developer Team Cherry.
At this year’s April Nintendo Direct, the game was announced to be coming out in 2025, offering fans the first crumb of news after years of near-silence. Since then, every announcement and showcase has the potential to finally reveal Silksong’s release date.
Fans tune into every presentation from every major platform, hoping for news about their beloved upcoming game, only to have their spirits dashed when it’s nowhere to be seen. After today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, where Silksong wasn’t even hinted at, it’s become clear that there’s only one logical time and place for the Silksong release date to finally be revealed, and that’s during Gamescom 2025.
Gamescom Is The Most Logical Place For The Silksong Release Date Reveal
A Playable Demo Will Be Available For The First Time At Gamescom
Hollow Knight: Silksong might have chosen Nintendo for the 2025 release window reveal, but it’s clearly shifted allegiances since then. The last news we received of the upcoming Metroidvania was part of Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase.
Instead of releasing a new trailer, Team Cherry decided to piggyback off the huge Xbox ROG announcement. A few seconds of new footage played on the handheld’s screen as its features were shown off. Earlier this month, Xbox officially announced that a playable demo of Silksong will be available at Gamescom this year, scheduled for August 20-24.
Microsoft will be bringing plenty of other Xbox news and games to the yearly games trade show, Gamescom, but the announcement post on Xbox Wire chose to lead with Silksong. While other games are listed later in the post, Silksong appears in the second paragraph, cutting straight to the point. It reads:
“This year, the Xbox booth will be full of fantastic upcoming games from Xbox and our incredible third-party partners coming to Xbox, PC, and Game Pass this Holiday and beyond – and yes, that includes Hollow Knight: Silksong.“
Knowing that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be playable for the first time ever on the grounds of Gamescom, it would make perfect sense for the release date to finally be revealed around that event, as well.
Team Cherry Doesn’t Always Do What It’s Expected To
Gamescom Makes The Most Sense, But There’s Another Option
The studio behind Hollow Knight and Silksong has a history of not doing what fans expect. Though I fully believe that a release date announcement or even a shadow drop is coming around Gamescom via Xbox, there’s another possibility that I have to at least mention.
Team Cherry used Nintendo to reveal the release window, and Microsoft to reveal a new trailer and demo. It might make a ridiculous kind of sense for the dev studio to throw a complete curveball and reveal the release date through Sony.
Here’s everything we know for sure so far about Silksong’s release window:
+ It will arrive before the holiday season of 2025.
+ A playable demo will be available at Gamescom on the Xbox ROG and PC, on August 20-24.
+ The game will be playable (possibly in full) at the ACMI museum in Melbourne starting September 18.
For now, all we can do is speculate. At the end of the day, it’s possible that Hollow Knight: Silksong will manage to surprise everyone with something completely out of left field. No matter what Team Cherry ends up doing, every member of the Silksong fan community will be closely watching Gamescom this August for a glimpse of the game and, finally, a hint of when the game will finally be released to the world.
