A Massive Nintendo Direct Reveal Gives Hope For One Underappreciated Genre On Switch 2

The July Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase took place earlier today and brought with it some nice surprises for the Nintendo Switch 2’s upcoming third-party support. Along with a good look at the upcoming Switch 2 games that were already announced, the Direct featured some more unexpected inclusions. Walking away from the showcase, my initial reaction was fairly positive overall, but it took me a while to realize that one huge reveal isn’t getting the discussion it deserves.

Before today, we didn’t have a release date for Bloober Team’s latest IP, Cronos: The New Dawn, the developer behind the outstanding 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake. The Direct confirmed, however, that Cronos is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 5, and I’m more hopeful than ever that we will see more horror games (and other mature titles) make their way to Nintendo’s popular console.

A Struggling Genre That Is Getting A Boon In 2025

The Switch 2 is proving to be a mighty achievement for Nintendo, shattering several records and becoming the fastest-selling console of all time. That said, Nintendo is not known for having the most mature games on its platforms, offering a limited number of horror games.

Mature titles have become significantly more commonplace on Nintendo platforms in recent years, but the biggest horror games often focus on other consoles and PC. Cronos coming to Switch 2 is a great sign for the future of the genre on the platform, as well as Bloober Team itself.

Modern AAA horror games have struggled to gain an audience, unless their names are Resident Evil or Silent Hill. The excellent Dead Space remake was a commercial failure. The Evil Within duology didn’t perform especially well, and neither did Alien Isolation. With the Switch 2 being so popular, it’s the perfect opportunity for horror game developers to break out to such a wide audience, and also show that the Switch 2 isn’t just about Mario or Zelda.

Nintendo Needs More Mature Games

A Console For All

Nintendo has had its core audience for a long time, along with a game design philosophy of focusing on lower-budget, lower-graphic-fidelity titles whose main draw is fun, engaging, and rewarding gameplay with iconic characters, like Samus, Link, and Mario. All of that is great for Nintendo and fans, but it would be beneficial for the console to the number of mature games continue to rise, with titles like FromSoftware’s The Duskbloods, and now, Cronos.

The Switch’s proven track record and the Switch 2’s increase in power have laid the groundwork for more horror and mature games to come to Switch 2. With the console doing so well already, it seems to be appealing to all types of players, and if this Nintendo Direct is anything to go off of, the Switch 2 may see a lot more variety than ever before.
