Xbox Game Pass has a free and “wonderfully chill” game that you can beat in a few hours, which I highly recommend you check out. The catalog for Microsoft’s subscription service has a variety of different types of games, from those that are action-focused, like some of the greatest RPGs on Game Pass, to cozy games and more.
The catalog is also always changing, as new titles are added and others are removed. It’s impossible to tell what changes will be made every month, though there are some day-one releases that are announced beforehand. This is the case with Frostpunk 2, which will be a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass in September.
Unpacking Is Free On Xbox Game Pass
The Indie Title Can Be Played On PC & Consoles
One of the best cozy games in the catalog is Unpacking, which is free to play via Xbox Game Pass. This means that, aside from the subscription value, you don’t have to pay any extra fees to gain access to it. The indie game developed by Witch Beam is available for consoles and PC via the subscription service.
The title can be played on both current-gen consoles from the Xbox Series X/S family, and on past-gen hardware, the Xbox One. Unpacking has been available on the Xbox Game Pass catalog since 2021 and has not been removed from the list. Even so, it could be removed at any given moment, so it’s best if you play it as soon as you can.
Unpacking Is The Perfect Definition Of A Chill Game
The Indie Game Sees You Unpack Cardboard Boxes & Organize Belongings

At its very essence, this indie gem is a cozy game. The concept behind it is to go through various stages and help the protagonist unpack their cardboard boxes full of personal items, as they adapt to their new living quarters. As was mentioned by the user rainy_night on Metacritic, Unpacking is “a wonderfully chill and meditative experience.”
Each of the game’s stages represents a different point in the main character’s life.
As was mentioned by the user, you can find more about the protagonist as you help them “organize their belongings” across the multiple phases of their life. Even though the game is chill and cozy, especially when it comes to gameplay, the story of Unpacking can pack quite the punch with its innovative way of telling an emotional narrative arc.
One of the good aspects about Unpacking, especially as a free title on Game Pass, is that it’s short. According to HowLongToBeat, you’ll take around 4 hours to beat the indie game, meaning you can see it through in an afternoon. Having been released in 2021, it took me a few years to play Unpacking, but I’m glad I did – thanks to my Xbox Game Pass subscription.
