The recent Nintendo Direct was fairly hit or miss. Depending on how much you love sports simulation games and titles that have been out on other consoles for a very long time, the Direct will have either overdelivered or hugely disappointed you. Unfortunately, that is increasingly becoming more common with each Direct, although, admittedly, it is difficult to cater to players’ ever-adjusting expectations.
Fortunately, there were a handful of impressive Switch 2 reveals, some that will have blown everyone away, and one in particular that flew rather under the radar. That’s largely because it was a very weird inclusion, one haphazardly thrown in among the triple-A offerings, making it feel immensely out of place. However, this game should be avoided at your own peril, as it could quickly become the next big cozy multiplayer obsession.
Chillin’ By The Fire Was The Best Nintendo Direct Reveal
It Was Weirdly Perfect
Just when I was getting sick of all the banal trailers for third-party titles we have all either played or passed on a thousand times, Nintendo dropped a surprising and weirdly eerie trailer for Chillin’ by the Fire. This new cozy game – which shadow-dropped exclusively for the Switch 2 after the presentation – sees you literally attempt to keep a campfire going, while also giving you the option to play with friends.
It is a simple third-party Switch 2 exclusive, one that puts a big emphasis on casually hanging out with friends and chatting over the Game Chat function. You can even see giant versions of your friends’ heads floating above the campfire as you talk. It may even be the best implementation of Game Chat in a Switch 2 game, to be perfectly honest.
Of course, among all of the more epic Nintendo Direct reveals, Chillin’ by the Fire may not have stood out to many. However, I can easily see this becoming the next big co-op obsession, if only because of how beautifully simple it is.
Chillin’ By The Fire Could Be The Next Big Multiplayer Obsession
The Best Way To Hang Out With Friends

While I waited for a jumpscare to pop out – Chillin’ by the Fire’s trailer really did give off the vibe that it is secretly a horror game (it isn’t, don’t worry cozy fans) – I thoroughly reveled in the delightful implementation of multiplayer elements. Building a campfire together as you battle the various weather conditions, or competing to see who can build the biggest campfire, are fun distractions to engage in as you natter away by the warm embers.
Game Chat has always felt like a Discord alternative, and it needs what I refer to as lobby games, experiences that don’t require much thought, but simply allow you to interact with one another while chatting. They don’t get in the way, instead helping to elevate the conversation. Chillin’ by the Fire is exactly that: a cozy, fun, and utterly relaxing way to chill with friends on the Switch 2. It may not be the most mind-blowing release, but I can see why it got a spot during an otherwise unspectacular Nintendo Direct.
