There are so many amazing games on Steam, including a handful of completely free ones. From the iconic Team Fortress 2 to Rocket League, there’s more than enough to enjoy on Steam for those who don’t feel like spending a single cent. Of course, with the current gaming landscape endlessly shifting, more often than not, these free games disappear without a trace, leaving only their once dedicated fanbases behind.
That is the case with one of Steam’s best free games, a title that launched all the way back in 2015 to critical acclaim and garnered a huge player base, only to be forgotten, and now, unfortunately, shut down. Luckily for those who enjoy the game, and those who’ve never heard of it, there’s still a little time left to give it a go before it is delisted forever and left unplayable.
Free FPS Block N Load Is About To Be Shut Down
It’s Being Canceled Along With Its Sequel
Block N Load launched back in 2015 on Steam and quickly made a name for itself. It was once one of Steam’s most played games, garnering a pretty impressive player base for a game of its size, and even threatening to take TF2’s place as the de facto team-based shooter. However, as time went on, fewer and fewer people flocked to it, and now, according to Steam charts, it is averaging just over 100 players a day.
Naturally, a dying player base and a lack of support have led the studio behind it, Toadman Interactive, to shut it down. Unfortunately, it is also canceling the sequel, Block N Load 2. Both games are being pulled from Steam on August 1, 2025, meaning there is little time left to check them out.
However, despite being pulled after over 10 years on the market – a very respectable run for one of the best indie FPS games – Block N Load is still absolutely worth playing before it goes, even if it is just for a round or two. This is one of Steam’s most underrated free FPS games, and it would be a shame not to give it a true send-off.
Block N Load Had A Lot Going For It
It Is TF2 Meets Minecraft

Block N Load is a 5 v 5 first-person shooter that blends elements of TF2 and Minecraft for an explosively good time that requires a lot more strategic planning and forethought than the likes of COD. You’ll build up your base’s defenses in the voxel sandbox, utilizing the many unique blocks available, and then fight against your opponent. Of course, they can manipulate the world around them, too, including tunneling beneath your base, so you’ll need to be ready for anything.
There’s a range of characters on offer, à la Team Fortress 2, each with their own unique weapons. They’re all a lot of fun to play as, and infinitely more zany than those on offer in TF2. I played a lot of Block N Load back when it was released, and have revisited it numerous times over the years.
It is a wildly creative game with a formula that simply works.
It is a wildly creative game with a formula that simply works. It is a great shame to see Block N Load go and leave Steam forever, especially without a bot mode to support it once it’s gone offline, but I can’t wait to return for these last two days and relive its glory days.
