While Final Fantasy is the most well-known RPG series under Square Enix’s belt, two other great RPGs are free on Xbox Game Pass, and you should definitely check them out if you enjoy the genre. The catalog for Microsoft’s subscription service is always going through changes, often expanding the number of available games. Wuchang’s recent addition to Game Pass is an example of this.
At the same time, games are often removed from the catalog at the start of every month. Even with this constant rotation of games, the service still has nearly 500 games to offer its members, all of which can be downloaded and played without any extra costs. Square Enix fans may be disappointed to know there aren’t any of the best Final Fantasy games on Xbox Game Pass, but there are other fantastic RPGs.

If you’re looking for an alternative RPG to play within the same style as some Final Fantasy games, you should know that the two core Octopath Traveler games are free on Xbox Game Pass. Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 are available for both consoles and PC via the subscription service.
It’s also worth noting that both games are compatible with the previous generation of consoles. If you haven’t upgraded to an Xbox Series X/S console yet, you can still enjoy both Octopath Traveler titles on Xbox One. Both games had previously left the catalog before, so I’d recommend playing these RPGs on Xbox Game Pass as soon as possible.

Both Octopath Traveler games are some of my favorite turn-based RPGs, matching the impact left by other critically acclaimed Final Fantasy games. The gameplay loop is extremely fun with their diverse cast of characters, and progression feels amazing as you unlock new abilities and go through individual character story arcs.
Moreover, both games easily leave you breathless with their gorgeous HD-2D artwork style, which was later applied to the Dragon Quest remakes. These titles can provide hundreds of hours of gameplay, with stories that you get eager to learn more about.
For further reference, the first Octopath Traveler has an 83 Metascore and an 8.2 user score on Metacritic. Meanwhile, Octopath Traveler 2 has an 85 Metascore and an 8.5 user score on Metacritic.
The good thing is that these games aren’t directly linked, so you can play the second one before the first Octopath Traveler without missing out on anything.
Their respective casts of characters, story, and setting are completely different, much like Final Fantasy. These are some of the best RPGs and my personal favorite games on Xbox Game Pass.
